Lance Morgan, Coos County Forester, told the board the forestry department has been offered the opportunity to buy Timberline (tax account numbers were listed in the purchase agreement) “prior to listing on open market” and that the agreed purchase price is $1,600,000. Morgan said the opportunity follows about three years of negotiation to secure the sale. The board earlier approved a resolution transferring forestry funds into capital outlay to support the acquisition.
Commissioners discussed timber as an important and consistent revenue source for the county. One commissioner said the county is relying on timber revenue as one of the few steady revenue streams and noted a federal change increasing the county share of certain ONC harvest proceeds could provide roughly $1,000,000 toward budget needs.
The motion to approve the purchase was made and seconded; the chair called for the vote and the motion passed. No public opposition was recorded at the time of the vote.
Next steps: Forester Lance Morgan was authorized to sign the purchase agreement and staff will complete closing steps and necessary accounting transfers.
