Curtis Jordan, chair of the Lyon County Fairboard, opened the meeting at 7:10 p.m. and the board, with a quorum present, approved the May 6 agenda and the April 8 minutes by unanimous vote.
The board approved a lease for the "Alison-Prom-Big Barn" for May 30, 2026, following a motion to accept the standard fees. It then considered a proposed banner over Main Street; Lisa Tibbals said Room Tax would cover the banner itself but not installation costs, and the board concluded installation expenses were too high to proceed this year and agreed to send a letter to the Main Street Committee explaining their reasons.
On entertainment and contracts, the board approved a DJ contract for $3,455 (adjusted to remove back speakers) and approved hiring the band Moxie Rukus for the Main Stage on Friday night at a cost of $1,200. Both actions passed by unanimous vote with the recorded movers and seconders on the floor.
Members discussed vendor space and political booths after a candidate submitted a vendor application. Board members noted that Republican and Democratic vendors had already submitted applications and paid fees; Lisa Tibbals said changes to vendor policy would require time to adopt and could not be retroactively applied this year. John Fielding moved to table a decision on allowing political booths inside the barn until the board receives legal clarification from Josh Foli; the motion passed unanimously.
On livestock matters, Curtis Jordan reported organizers are adding a Mini Beef show to the Sheep Show and said preparations were progressing.
The board also moved forward on fairgrounds maintenance: it approved purchasing an additional portable stage to expand the footprint used last year and discussed replacing a swamp cooler for the rabbit barn (previously authorized). Members said they will review electrical placement for Voshal Hall with Facilities staff and will solicit a welding bid for arena signage repairs.
Chair Jordan closed by thanking board members and volunteers for their work. The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
Next steps include obtaining legal guidance from county staff on the political-booth question, sending the letter to the Main Street Committee about banner installation, and completing the approved maintenance purchases.
