Council authorizes participation in Northern Arizona law-enforcement training academy to reduce training costs

Police Chief Bobby Martin presented an intergovernmental agreement that would allocate the academy’s operating costs across participating law-enforcement agencies in Navajo and Apache counties. Under the agreement agencies would pay $10,000 per year, receive unlimited access to the Northern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy and eliminate individual recruit fees, Chief Martin said, noting that sending an officer outside the counties for training can cost between $10,000 and $40,000.
Chief Martin said money generated from the pooled contributions will stay with the training center to buy equipment and cover training needs. Council Member Sherry Cosper Duke moved to authorize the mayor to sign the agreement; April Williams seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Council members characterized the agreement as a cost-saving measure that will make local training more accessible. The council took no additional action beyond authorizing the mayor to sign the IGA.
