Commissioners question size of hazardous-waste cleanup invoices, pause payment pending review

County Counselor Jim Emerson told the commissioners May 22 that two final invoices from Clean Harbors for the recent hazardous household waste cleanup were submitted: $10,177.90 and $12,993.92. Emerson said additional small charges for battery shipment, utilities and other minor expenses may still arrive.
Commissioner Carl Wood said he planned to visit the site and questioned why the invoices were so high. Commissioner Tom Moody suggested the board "sit on" the invoices until Tuesday while Emerson does further investigation. The minutes record no vote or payment authorization on the HHW invoices during the meeting.
Emerson said he wants to investigate a bit more before paying and indicated the county had received two final invoices and expected a small additional charge for battery shipment and utilities. No formal payment was recorded at the meeting; follow-up was scheduled.
