Emergency manager briefs commissioners on Western Kansas fires, requests signature for EMPG application

Quinton Parsons, Crawford County’s emergency manager, told commissioners May 22 that the county’s Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) application needs an updated signature and requested the board authorize it.
Parsons also briefed the board on assistance the county provided to Western Kansas wildfire responses, saying the fires began with lightning and praising local personnel who helped with the effort. The minutes record commissioners thanking those who assisted and Parsons naming the individuals involved.
Chairman Bruce Blair asked where residents can find a list of tornado shelters on the 15th anniversary of the Joplin tornado; Parsons said the county Facebook page and the Emergency Management tab on the county website list public tornado shelters and noted some towns do not have public shelters, advising residents on alternatives. Commissioners inquired about the Genasys alert-subscription system and whether Baker Fire has public shelter capacity; Parsons confirmed some subscriptions have increased and that Baker Fire’s shelter is for its crew only.
The board approved the EMPG application and authorized the chairman to sign (motion 26-245).
