KLW Reassessment outlines timetable for townwide property reassessment in Walton

Robert Koszarek of KLW Reassessment told the Walton Town Board on June 10 that appraisers will begin field work on Monday, June 17, 2024, as part of a townwide reassessment covering the Town and Village of Walton. He said the County will mail data mailers to property owners, appraiser vehicles will be clearly marked and staff will carry identification, and KLW will host two public information sessions—June 18 at the Walton Fire Hall and June 22 at the Walton Town Hall.
Supervisor Joseph Cetta described the purpose of the reassessment as ensuring values are equalized across the tax roll. He said, "the rule of thumb is a 1/3 may go up, a 1/3 may go down, and a 1/3 may stay the same," framing the effort as an update to reflect current market conditions.
Assessor Penny Haddad reported internal staff changes, noting Gina Smith has begun work in the Assessor’s Office and new state- and county-access credentials are being set up for her. Haddad also said KLW has submitted its data mailer materials to the County Department of Real Property Tax Services for printing and mailing.
Koszarek told the board that property owners will not receive their assessment disclosure letters until March 2025; at that time owners will have an opportunity to contact KLW and the Assessor's Office with questions. Haddad reiterated statutory grievance procedures and cited Real Property Tax Law §524 to explain why adjourned grievance hearings may occur when complaints are filed shortly before scheduled grievance hearings.
The board heard that appraisers will identify themselves on site with town-approved markings and identification badges; residents who wish to discuss a specific property may wait for the disclosure mailings in March 2025 or attend the announced public sessions. No formal action was required or taken on the reassessment schedule at the June 10 meeting.
