Lanett restoration committee wins grant for highway welcome sign; resident raises utility-rate concerns

The Lanett Restoration Committee told the Lanett City Council on July 1 that it has located grant funding to build a Welcome Sign at Exit 79, a project committee leaders said will be paid for by an Alabama Power grant.
Steve Wheeler, chairman of the Lanett Restoration Committee, said committee members identified “a need for a Welcome Sign coming into the city” after the Alabama Department of Transportation expanded the right-of-way on that approach. Wheeler said the Chambers County Development Authority and committee volunteer leaders Patsy Lewis and Martha Scott helped find the grant and that the committee received a quote from All-Star Graphics to produce the sign.
Mayor Jamie Heard and councilmembers voiced support for the project during the 5:30 p.m. work session at Lanett City Hall.
During the public-comment portion, resident Denise Zachery raised concerns about water and sewer rates, asking why businesses were paying the same rates as residents and noting the city’s rates were “extremely low.” Mayor Jamie Heard said he agreed with the concern and that he had already corrected some issues where businesses such as car washes and laundromats had been paying lower rates than they should have been.
Resident Pat Woody asked about the airport manager vacancy. Mayor Heard said he had extended an offer to a candidate who is attempting to sell his New Mexico home and that, if sale issues are not resolved by the end of the month, the city will move to the next candidate.
Before adjourning, Mayor Heard asked for a motion; Councilmember Malone moved to adjourn and Councilmember Thomas seconded. The meeting adjourned at 5:47 p.m.
