LANETT, Ala. — The City Council of the City of Lanett met in regular session on Monday, July 1, 2024, and voted unanimously to enter an executive session to discuss a potential sale of city property and possible litigation.
Mayor Jamie L. Heard presided over the 6 p.m. meeting in the Lanett Municipal Complex. Councilmembers Tony Malone, Tamalita Autry, Angelia Thomas, Tifton Dobbs and Ronnie Tucker were present. Rev. Rodney Jones gave the invocation and Mayor Heard led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Councilmember Tamalita Autry moved to approve the amended agenda; Councilmember Angelia Thomas seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Councilmember Tifton Dobbs moved to approve the minutes of the June 17, 2024 meeting; Councilmember Ronnie Tucker seconded and that motion also carried unanimously. Approval of city invoices was moved by Councilmember Ronnie Tucker, seconded by Councilmember Angelia Thomas, and carried without dissent.
During committee reports and recognition, Councilmember Angelia Thomas presented a certificate of good citizenship to Ralph and Barbara Cullwell for maintaining a well-kept yard in District 4. Councilmember Tamalita Autry read a Good Citizenship certificate recognizing Edward Patten for assisting the Restoration Committee with street cleanup and thanked the Finance Department for distributing letters about trash pickup. Autry also said she and Councilmember Thomas attended a press conference for a Senior Center grant and visited a youth summer camp.
Mayor Heard asked Patsy Lewis to introduce a new member, Vanessa Lanier; the mayor also reminded residents that City Hall would be closed July 4–5 for the holiday and asked the Restoration Committee members in attendance to stand.
Later in the meeting Mayor Heard requested a roll-call vote to go into executive session. Attorney Gray stated the reason for the session was "to discuss the potential sale of property and possible litigation." The roll-call vote recorded Malone = yes, Autry = yes, Thomas = yes, Dobbs = yes, Tucker = yes and Heard = yes. The council subsequently voted by roll call to come out of executive session with the same unanimous votes.
Councilmember Tony Malone moved to adjourn; Councilmember Ronnie Tucker seconded. With no further business, the mayor closed the meeting. The minutes were attested by Mayor Jamie L. Heard and Deborah Gilbert, City Clerk/Treasurer.
No formal decisions or contract awards related to the property sale or litigation were recorded in the public minutes; the transcript records only that the council entered and exited an executive session for the stated purpose.
