A contentious exchange on March 11 focused on governance and oversight of the Port Jefferson Country Club’s Board of Governors. Trustee David Franco moved to dissolve the Board of Governors, saying trustees and residents have repeatedly been told bylaws and staggered elections were forthcoming but the work has not been completed. The motion was seconded for discussion.
Mayor Sheppard and other trustees pushed back, noting that the Board of Governors was elected by membership and that dissolving an elected body raises process and code‑based consequences, including possible impacts to the Country Club Management Advisory Committee (CCMAC) seat currently reserved for the Board of Governors president. Several trustees recounted a history of drafts and legal review needs and stressed that bylaws and an election schedule must be developed with legal input.
Trustee Ugrinsky committed to deliver a draft bylaws package for board review by March 25. In response to that commitment, Trustee Franco withdrew his motion to dissolve the Board of Governors. The board agreed to continue work toward bylaws and to consider election timing and staggered terms in the coming meeting cycle.
