Selectmen limit black car use to Fire Department business after debate over which vehicle to take home

The Danville Board of Selectmen voted Jan. 5 to restrict use of the town’s black car to Fire Department business and directed that the black car — not the red vehicle — be the car used by department personnel stationed at home.
Vice Chair Shawn O’Neil moved the change and said he was rescinding his prior authorization for broader use of the black car. "I want to make a motion that the black car, not the red one, is for the use of Fire Department personnel if they are stationed at home," O’Neil said. Annemarie Inman seconded the motion; Rob Aliberti abstained and the motion passed.
The vote followed a short debate about which vehicle is practical for an off-duty responder to take home. Fire Chief Rob Aliberti said the utility vehicle (an F150) had been intended for use by other members and argued it was never out of service. Shawn said the larger F150 may not fit into many home garages and that when a vehicle is parked outside it can be covered in snow, making access difficult; he favored the smaller black car for that reason.
Rob said he would review the prior meeting recording to clarify earlier comments about replacing the utility truck. The board agreed the vehicles are town property and deliberated how to balance station needs, vehicle size, and practicality for personnel on call.
What’s next: The policy change takes effect immediately for vehicle assignment; the Fire Chief may follow up with the board about prior meeting records and any operational adjustments.
