The Plymouth Planning Commission on June 2 recommended an administrative amendment to the zoning code to rename "Knox boxes" as "emergency key boxes" and to clarify which city staff review their siting and installation.
Staff said the change is largely administrative: it harmonizes the zoning code with a recent change to the city code and specifies the police chief and building commissioner as reviewers so both codes cross-reference the same practice.
Commissioners asked whether fire or police have access; staff said the fire department holds the access key and that the change does not expand or alter access in practice. The proposal also clarifies which code (the Plymouth building code) governs siting and design.
After a brief public hearing with no speakers, the commission voted to forward the recommendation to City Council. Staff said the amendment is intended to reduce administrative complexity and ensure consistent review of emergency key boxes going forward.
