Members discussed removing redundant clauses that require authorization for visits and instead keeping an expectation that board members coordinate visits with the board clerk and in consultation with the superintendent and be accompanied during official visits to protect student safety. Several members emphasized flexibility for routine situations (for example, attending lunch or other informal visits) while preserving the expectation of accompaniment and prior coordination.
Committee members also recommended language encouraging board members to report back to their colleagues about school visits to share insights and preserve transparency, while protecting any confidential student information. The policy was slated to move forward for a second reading and possible adoption by the full board.
