Organizers Elizabeth Rose and Melissa Montel said Rubbish to Runway, a fashion fundraiser that repurposes discarded materials into garments, will return to VZY Memorial Park for a two-night benefit on Friday and Saturday, June 26–27. The event raises funds for VZY Park and showcases community designers, models and volunteers.
Elizabeth Rose described the project’s origin as tied to volunteer work in Guatemala with Longway Home and a fundraiser in 2010 that used reused materials to build community support. "And so Rubbish to Runway was born," Rose said, describing the event’s evolution from an overseas fundraising idea to a local community production.
Melissa Montel, who coordinates the production locally, said the show depends on a wide range of volunteers—designers, models, grant writers, production staff and local businesses that supply lighting and draping. Organizers said the show is professional in production yet intentionally inclusive: designers range from professionals to people in teaching, medicine and retirees, and the program includes intergenerational collaboration between older and younger participants.
The event includes a pre-show reception, live music, mocktails this year, and family-friendly programming. Organizers said they were selling tickets and noted that Friday night had limited seating remaining; the program said about 40 tickets remained for Friday out of a 150-seat allocation (availability reported by show organizers during the recording). The year’s theme is "World Reimagined," intended as an open prompt for designers and performers.
Proceeds support Friends of VZY Memorial Park and local programs; organizers encouraged residents to volunteer or attend, with ticket links and Instagram information provided on the show.
