Council approves temporary use of Loma de la Cruz Center for youth mental-health support hub

The Eagle Pass City Council on June 2 unanimously approved a request by the Eagle Pass Public Health Coalition and the Support Hub to use the Loma de la Cruz community center through December 2026 for youth mental-health group sessions, peer-led education, supervised homework time and coalition operations.
Cassidy Garcia, coordinator for the Support Hub, described programming for adolescents ages 12–16 and a peer-leader model for ages 17–21. Michaela Hernandez, program analyst for the Eagle Pass Public Health Coalition, said the coalitions together were awarded about $1.6 million over three years from Methodist Healthcare Ministries and are seeking sustained funding beyond the current grant cycle.
Presenters said the center would host group activities, wellness workshops, a community closet for basic items, mobile wellness-unit stops and coordination with the Maverick County Hospital District for screenings and referrals. Council members praised the programs and approved the temporary use, with staff to return to council if circumstances change.
What happens next: the coalitions may occupy the Loma de la Cruz Center through Dec. 2026 while pursuing additional grant funding and will coordinate with city staff and partners for operations and community outreach.
