John Hopper told commissioners he and a board of veterans and family members have launched Veterans 7, a newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Orleans that aims to provide walk-in assistance, mental-health referrals, and job and training connections for veterans.
Hopper, who identified himself as a 25-year U.S. Army veteran and the executive director of the new group, said Veterans 7 plans to partner with local and national organizations, including VA-affiliated programs and area veteran service organizations, to offer immediate support and peer networks. He said the group will operate from office space in Orleans and is developing outreach materials and a Facebook presence to raise awareness.
"We're not asking for anything from any of you," Hopper said, adding the group wants to coordinate with county agencies and other stakeholders to connect veterans to services. Board members emphasized mental-health access and plans to bring laptops and portal assistance for older veterans who struggle with online systems.
Commissioners thanked the presenters and encouraged outreach; no county funding or formal county action was requested or taken during the meeting.
