Owners want Auto Row; township told road vacation would need public hearing and ordinance

Staff reported that the Auto Row corridor is only partially dedicated to the township and that subsequent land transfers have left adjacent owners (referred to in the meeting as the Freos) owning property on both sides. A township speaker explained the owners were open to vacating the undedicated portion and taking ownership of the entire road.
"We would vacate by agreement, but we still have to do the public. So, there's two ways to do it. You either vacate by petition or vacate by agreement. Um, and then the process is the same with respect to the um the public hearing process and the ordinance," a committee member explained during the discussion.
Staff told the board it planned to present the request to the planning commission for review. Board members noted the road had originally been intended as a through route to provide access to back developments, which did not occur, and discussed the practical result that it now functions more like a long driveway. Staff said that if the road is vacated the township will need to amend its transportation plan to remove the road from that plan.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; staff described next steps that include preparing the vacation package and taking the matter to the planning commission for comment and then following the public hearing and ordinance process if the board chooses to proceed.
