Lower Macungie approves fee schedule, homestead exemption, appointments and several administrative items

The Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners approved a series of resolutions and administrative items during its December meeting.
Finance staff presented Resolution 2025-60, the 2026 fee schedule, noting a 5% increase in the garbage fee at the hauler’s request and adjustments to permitting and recreation fees; the board adopted the resolution. The board also adopted Resolution 2025-61 setting the homestead exemption for 2026 (staff presented a 50% exclusion and referenced an amount of $120,125 as part of the homestead calculation as presented). The board approved Resolution 2025-62 establishing the bond amount for the independently elected tax collector based on a Lehigh County determination; staff quoted a county-wide bond figure and noted the township’s portion of the 2025 premium was about $425 of an $11,572 premium with the remainder paid by the school district.
Members approved Resolution 2025-63 naming the compost center road 'Pork Lane' (several commissioners joked about nearby cross streets and an 'Applesauce Road' quip). The board appointed five individuals as special fire police under Resolution 2025-64: Donald Smith Jr., Matthew Krupa, Jason Stfano, Todd Hefner and Tyler Doyle. Under Resolution 2025-65 the board authorized adding the new township treasurer, Miss Dobson, as a signer on several township bank accounts as part of the transition to new finance staff.
Separately, the board approved a one-year contract extension with the Sanctuary at Halfsville for stray-friendly cat services, with the meeting packet listing a $175 per-cat fee for spay/neuter services. Engineering staff recommended release of escrow funds for Woodmont Valley Phase 2 ($555,110.96) and full release and closeout for the Shelby restaurant project ($18,799); both releases were approved. The board also approved the transfers, bill list and payroll (payroll shown as $165,768.20; total of all funds presented $385,683.76).
Public comment included remarks from incoming commissioner Mr. Barrett, who thanked outgoing commissioners for their service.
What happens next: Administrative staff will process appointments, execute the animal-services contract, update bank signatories and complete escrow releases; finance and engineering will carry out implementation steps for the fee schedule, bond paperwork and development closeouts.
