Berea council approves multiple appointments and names standing committee rosters

At the June 2 meeting the Berea City Council approved several mayoral appointments and adopted a municipal order setting standing legislative committee rosters for 2026–2027.

Appointments: Mayor Bruce Freley asked council to confirm his appointment of Casey Botkin to the Berea Housing Authority. The motion to approve was moved by Teresa Centers and seconded by Steve Coddle; council approved the appointment by voice vote. The mayor also asked for approval to reappoint Rick Fulton to the housing authority; that reappointment likewise passed by voice vote. The mayor requested confirmation of Beverly Harker to an unexpired Planning Commission term through Jan. 17, 2027; that motion passed after a second from Michael Barnett. The council also approved George Mendoza to fill an unexpired term on the Zoning Adjustment Board through Feb. 17, 2030.

Committee assignments: Mr. Gilbert presented Municipal Order 04-2026, which lists membership for the Audit & Finance, Public Works, Parks, and Personnel committees for the 2026–2027 term. The roster was approved by voice vote and the municipal order will be filed.

Council discussion and context: Council briefly discussed statutory qualifications for housing-authority appointments and the mayor stated the appointments are at-large subject to federal rules that prevent a majority from one party. No member requested further changes to the committee rosters.

Next steps: Executive orders and formal paperwork to effect the appointments will be completed by staff; committee assignments will be in place for the coming year.
