Commission okays driveway width changes at Creekide, requires street trees and access controls

The St. Lucie County Commission on June 2 approved modifications to driveway widths in the Creekide townhome community after staff and the applicant negotiated design compromises and mitigation measures.
Corey Benton (planning staff) described a staff alternative that retains 10‑ft aprons at the street while allowing driveways to flare to 16 feet beyond the apron, coupled with required street‑tree plantings to preserve front‑yard green space. Benton said staff recommended planting minimums and other adjustments to offset the loss of visible front yard area.
Mike Doula, representing DR Horton, told the board the change responds to residents’ requests to park two vehicles side‑by‑side rather than on the street. Doula said the applicant is open to installing signage or access controls to prevent unwanted circulation through neighboring single‑family areas.
Commissioners discussed neighborhood circulation and resident concerns and voted to approve the applicant’s modified plan together with staff‑recommended planting and access‑control measures.
