The Corte Madera Town Council unanimously appointed Emily Mueller to the youth seat on the town’s Climate Action Committee on June 2.
Mueller, 17 and a junior at Redwood High School, told the council she has completed AP Environmental Science, has taken conservation classes at a community college, and participates in school leadership. She said she wants to amplify youth voices on the committee, encourage tree‑planting and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and help educate peers about local climate actions such as reducing natural gas use.
Council members pressed Mueller on her knowledge of the town’s climate goals (noting a 40% greenhouse gas reduction goal by 2030 and priorities such as transitioning away from natural gas and planting fire‑resistant trees). Mueller said she is familiar with those priorities and would be able to meet the committee’s attendance expectations (third Wednesday of each month, 4:30–6 p.m.) and participate in outreach and research tasks.
A resident (Marla Orth) offered public support during the online public comment period. The council then moved, seconded and voted to appoint Mueller; the term begins July 1, 2026 and expires June 30, 2027.
Why it matters: The youth seat gives a direct channel for younger residents to participate in local climate planning and outreach, and the council signaled support for recruiting more youth engagement.
What’s next: Mueller will begin serving on the committee in July. Staff will provide information about meeting attendance expectations and virtual attendance protocols if needed.
