Gwen McReynolds, representing the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, said the chapter has expanded its Field of Flags at Liberty Garden and will hold a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13.
“This year we are adding George Washington since it’s America 250,” McReynolds said, adding that the display will include 224 flags and will again place 27 Madison County patriots at the front of the field. She said organizers plan to read every patriot’s name at the ceremony and keep the program brief so families can attend.
McReynolds described a Friday afternoon volunteer installation (rebar and placement) and encouraged people with physical strength or students seeking service hours to assist. Flags are available for a one-time fee of $35 to cover the flag, rebar and supplies; organizers said flags remain in the display indefinitely but will be replaced as needed.
People who believe they have an ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War can contact the chapter through its Facebook page to request a flag. McReynolds said the group is working to include overlooked patriots this year, including Mary Hemmings, an enslaved woman connected to Thomas Jefferson whose descendants meet eligibility criteria under the chapter’s rules.
The dedication and the related events at Liberty Garden are part of local America 250 observances; organizers invited families and encouraged children to read markers as an educational activity.
