Staff said most open positions for next year had been filled, with a few specialized roles (occupational therapist, school psychologist, case manager) recruited and some positions still posted through the summer.
Space and safety changes: Paula (school leadership) described operational changes at Hughes/HPS driven by space constraints and safety concerns. She said the district will eliminate the rear carpool lane and maintain a single carpool lane alongside the gym to create a continuous emergency access lane, noting the change will slow dismissal times and may require staff or front‑office pick‑up for some parents. "We need to have an emergency lane. We can't hold off anymore," she said, describing past near‑misses involving buses and parents pulling into travel lanes.
Classroom relocations and program impacts: To move preschool out of hallway locations, the district will relocate preschool into a classroom; this shift will require art and technology to become mobile, cart‑based specials which limits access to certain equipment (the kiln will be secured out of student use). Administrators acknowledged curriculum impacts: art and technology instruction will be constrained by space and the need to transport materials between rooms.
Facilities and compliance: Administrators noted conversations with the fire marshal who has provided temporary leeway for some noncompliant conditions but stated that leeway is not indefinite. The board and administrators stressed prioritizing safety and returning confidential staff workspaces to private offices.
