Council approves submission of $400,000 CDBG application for upper-story apartments

City administrator Andrea requested and the council approved submission of a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application to finance interior completion of four upper-story apartments in a building across the street from an existing project. The request totals $400,000 ($100,000 per unit), Andrea said, and would use federal CDBG funds subject to low-to-moderate-income guidelines; she emphasized no city funds would be required for the application.
Andrea noted prior financial assistance for the building — a $100,000 state catalyst grant for the roof and a $30,000 city grant for tuckpointing — and said the CDBG award would allow the interior finishes necessary for occupancy. Dan Cohane of the Ames Regional Economic Alliance joined Andrea in describing income thresholds (staff cited household-of-one 80% AMI at $68,550) and said the project would serve a range of local workers.
Council moved and approved the application submission by roll call. Staff will prepare the application materials and submit them within the indicated application window.
