Kwanis donation reduces swim‑lesson fees for Putnam children

"We've been sponsoring this way before my time. So, we have a check for $2,500 to sponsor their program this coming year," Mike Meredith said, explaining the funds will lower the normal $40 lesson fee to $10 for participants. County staff said last year 237 children completed Red Cross lessons supported by similar contributions.
Commissioners praised the donation as a public‑safety investment in a county with many waterways. Commissioner Harvey told the donor group, "You saved lives in our community," while other board members highlighted the program's role in preventing drowning and making lessons affordable.
The donation will be used to offset registration fees and expand scholarship access; no appropriation action was required at the meeting because the donation is being accepted and processed through Parks & Recreation.
