They cited 771 dress‑code infractions this year and stated those infractions amounted to 4,266 hours of lost instructional time. “An overwhelming majority of the student body clearly feels as though our current dress code is not the most viable option,” the students said.
Students asked the board to consider a transition to a standard of dress (school‑appropriate clothing with fewer color limits) while keeping prohibitions on gang‑related apparel, excessive midriff, vulgar language and very short skirts. Board members thanked the students for their research and described the issue as worth revisiting, noting historical reasons for the original policy (equity concerns for economically disadvantaged students) and asking staff to provide further analysis if the board wants to pursue change.
No formal policy vote was taken at the meeting; board members encouraged further discussion and review with staff on potential impacts, enforcement and equity implications.
