Vineland board appoints Dr. Ariel Laara as superintendent, effective July 1

The Vineland Board of Education voted June 3 to appoint Dr. Ariel Laara as the district’s next superintendent, effective July 1. The board’s search committee told members it had reviewed about 50 applicants and recommended Laara as a turnaround‑oriented leader with experience in instruction, community engagement and fiscal stewardship.

The board moved and approved the resolution to hire Laara after a roll call vote. Motion to approve the resolution was made by Miss Vasquez and seconded by Mr. Silva; the roll call recorded a majority of “yes” votes and the motion carried. One board member stated they planned to recuse on the matter while also indicating a yes vote during the roll call (recusal note recorded in the meeting minutes).

In brief remarks to the board and community, Laara thanked the board and described his personal and professional journey. “I stand before you tonight to accept the appointment as your superintendent of schools. I do so with profound gratitude. I do so with absolute focus,” Laara said, describing his upbringing and long career in education.

The search committee framed Laara as a candidate who “delivers results,” citing experience building pipelines for teachers and work on instructional leadership in diverse communities. Board members praised the transparent search process and expressed confidence in Laara’s stated emphasis on accountability, community partnership and student achievement.

The board signed the formal contract following the vote and indicated the district will finalize onboarding steps before Laara’s July 1 start date. No further substantive action and no formal appeals were recorded on the appointment during the meeting.

The appointment was the principal formal action of the evening; the board recessed to executive session following presentations and returned to complete routine approvals.
