Currituck commissioners approve utilities text amendment, airport hangar lease and routine appointments; budget hearings continued

At its June 1 meeting the Currituck County Board of Commissioners approved several administrative and operational items.
• PB26‑05 (TRC utilities text amendment): The board approved an amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance exempting county‑owned minor utility facilities (e.g., pump or lift stations) from certain dimensional development and use‑specific standards when strict application is impractical; staff and the Planning Board supported the change as consistent with county infrastructure goals.
• Sole‑source procurement resolution (Aqua Azul): The board approved a resolution under N.C. Gen. Stat. 143‑129(e)(6) to permit sole‑source purchases of Aqua Azul ultraviolet disinfection products and replacement parts compatible with the county’s existing wastewater systems; staff said the procurement will be used for ongoing parts replacement and occasional system replacement.
• Airport hangar ground lease: Commissioners approved a ground lease with Sun Energy for a 100x100‑foot hangar and apron at the county airport, with an initial term described in the docket and annual rent noted. The tenant plans to base an aircraft locally and purchase fuel from county facilities.
• Appointments and consent agenda: The board approved multiple appointments (Corova Roads Maintenance Service District, Opioid Advisory Board replacements) and passed the consent agenda after motion and second.
• Budgets: Public hearings on the FY2026–27 general county budget, the Tourism Development Authority budget and the Ocean Sands Water & Sewer District budget were opened; no speakers were signed up and the board deferred final action to a later meeting.
