The Charter Review Committee voted May 28 to add language allowing specified charter notices to be posted on the city website as an alternative to publication in the city’s official newspaper.
Jennifer, presenting the draft language, said the change replaces references to publication in the “city official newspaper” with an option “or for four successive weeks on the city website,” applying in several charter sections that deal with franchise ordinances, petitioned amendments and similar notices. Committee members asked whether the change would apply broadly to all ordinances or only specific franchise ordinances; staff clarified the draft was intended to target franchise notices and other specified items rather than every ordinance.
After brief discussion, a member moved that the committee adopt the modernization language as a recommendation to council; the motion was seconded and the committee approved it. The vote was recorded as passing unanimously after a brief hand-raising discrepancy that member Grant Harrington corrected by saying he had voted yes.
The committee instructed staff to include the approved language in the final report that will be forwarded to the City Council for inclusion in the council packet.
