Board resists electric driveway gate at 177 Main Street, asks applicant to revise

The Design Review Board pushed back on a proposal for an electric driveway gate at 177 Main Street, asking the applicant to return with a revised application that better fits the Main Street historic district.
Agent Faraz Manur told the board the gate is intended to deter hotel patrons and others from using the private driveway to make U-turns and said the owners view the gate as a security and traffic-control measure. Village staff and several board members cautioned that freestanding driveway gates are not common in the Main Street historic district and asked for evidence of a traffic problem and alternatives that would be less visually intrusive.
Board members suggested options such as relocating a gate farther from the sidewalk, using a rope or other temporary measure, or presenting more detailed timing and engineering for an electric gate. The board did not approve the submitted gate design and asked the applicants to work with staff and return with revised documentation.
