Controller’s office rolls out 2027 budget timeline; new assistant controller introduced

The Michigan City controller told the finance committee on June 2 that the 2027 budget maintenance process has begun and that department heads should start preparing their submissions.
The controller said the office aims to deliver budget books by Sept. 11 and prefers a first reading of the budget on Sept. 15 so the council has material in advance of workshops and hearings. The controller warned that new state legislation could require scheduling an additional meeting and said workshops will be scheduled as needed.
The controller also introduced the new assistant city controller, Anne Schaefer, who began work the week of May 11 and will attend future council and committee meetings. The controller noted long‑time staff member Mary Lynn will retire on June 18 and that the controller will bring her to the next full council meeting.
The controller said an email with the budget timeline will be sent to department heads and that staff will coordinate with council leadership to schedule workshops and hearings.
