Design board approves small sidewalk planters at Gucci storefront, flags doorway/egress check

The Design Review Board approved a request to place eight 12-inch ceramic planters at the Gucci storefront at 17 New Town Lane, while cautioning the applicant to confirm that the placement does not obstruct a doorway or required egress.
The applicant, who identified himself as Maas and said he represents Gucci as the architect, said the planters would sit pushed against the steps and that additional planters exist on Gucci property. Village representative Billy Hack raised a concern after reviewing a photograph that one grouping of planters appeared to block a doorway; Hack said the board must ensure required egress is not obstructed and that the sidewalk is Village property, and advised verifying whether the opening shown is a functioning door.
Board members discussed whether planters on Village sidewalks have been approved previously and noted the board has discretion to permit planters on Village property. The board then voted to approve the application by voice vote, while asking the applicant to confirm placement so that no required doorway or egress is blocked.
