The DeBary City Council on June approved Resolution 2026‑03 to recognize Mayor Karen Shaz’s service and to designate the entrance road to Alexander Island Park "Karen Shaz Way" in perpetuity.
City staff and councilmembers praised the mayor’s leadership on the Alexander Island project, which staff described as a 224‑acre nature park on the St. Johns River acquired to prevent development. The city manager noted grant and donation support for the project and said construction of the entrance, parking and bathrooms is nearing completion with a grand opening anticipated in December 2026. Council approved the resolution by unanimous vote.
Mayor Shaz thanked the council and staff and said she was humbled by the recognition.
