Lake Placid board reviews first readings of four district policy updates

The Lake Placid Central School District Board of Education on June 9 reviewed first readings of four policy updates, including changes to physical education eligibility, disciplinary language for students with disabilities, visitor permissions and language clarifying dispute procedures for students designated as homeless under the McKinney‑Vento Act.
Tim provided the overview, saying the physical education amendment expands the eligibility provision from grades 11–12 to grades 10–12 to align with New York State regulations and clarifies the process for making up missed PE so students who miss class for athletics are not improperly shown as ineligible because of a placeholder zero in the grade book. "This language inclusion will mirror what's in the code of conduct but also clean that process up a little more," Tim said.
On discipline, Tim said the proposed edits are largely tonal and were prompted when a special education teacher raised a concern about wording that described student entitlements as "privileges." The board was told the revised text will refer to the rights students hold under special education law rather than characterizing them as privileges; Tim specifically thanked special education teacher Lisa Marvin for flagging the issue.
Board member Will Brooks prompted a proposed change to visitor policy that would permit students in grades 9–12 to bring guests from regional schools when approved through the office. Tim said the change will be reflected in the code of conduct as part of the first-read package.
Tim also described an addition to the homeless student policy following a state desk audit: the policy now explicitly identifies the district's McKinney‑Vento liaison and outlines a dispute-resolution process and timeline for families who wish to contest eligibility determinations.
All four items were presented as first reads for further refinement and will be considered again during an upcoming code-of-conduct review meeting. No final board votes on these policy changes were recorded at the June 9 session.
