Abington Heights students present state and national powerlifting banners to board

During public comment, students from Abington Heights presented championship banners and thanked the board for support.
"We currently have over 50 members from sixth graders all the way to seniors," said Ava Lawis, who identified herself as captain of the Abington Heights powerlifting team. Lawis told the board the girls’ team won first place at the Pennsylvania state championships for the third consecutive year and that multiple athletes earned individual medals and state records. She said 12 team members traveled to the national meet in Omaha, Nebraska, where the girls’ varsity team placed third and the boys’ JV team placed first.
Lawis thanked volunteer coaches, family members, classmates and school staff for equipment upgrades, singlets and help covering competition entry fees. Coach Claude Welcome, who the presentation credited with starting the program in 1982, stood to be recognized by board members during the meeting.
Board members offered congratulations and invited the team to a photo; no board action was required for the recognition.
