Olentangy board authorizes negotiation of GMP #1 for High School 5; approves glazing for temporary classrooms at Berlin High

At its June 1 meeting the Olentangy Local Board of Education authorized district staff to negotiate Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) #1 with Robertson Construction for High School 5 and approved a bid to convert Berlin High School's extended learning areas into temporary classrooms.
Facilities lead Mr. Gordon told the board the requested resolution would give him authorization "to negotiate GMP number one for the high school, which will be ... some site work and structural steel and a couple other smaller components as needed for longer lead time items." He said the GMP will be negotiated on a "not to exceed" basis through the district's construction-manager-at-risk approach so contractors are chosen for cost, capability and schedule rather than only low bid.
Mr. Gordon also described the Berlin High School work: glassing in selected extended learning areas and installing blinds so the spaces can serve as classrooms until High School 5 opens, after which the blinds can be raised and the areas returned to open learning spaces. "So we'll glass those in. We'll put blinds in there. We'll use them until high school 5 opens as some additional classroom space," he said.
Superintendent Meyer had placed the two facility items in the superintendent consent package (items A–F) and asked the board to approve them in a single action. The board approved the superintendent consent items as a single vote; several members recorded 'yes' on the roll call.
The board then moved into an executive session to discuss the employment or compensation of a public employee under the statutory provision cited in the meeting, and the meeting ended after the board returned from executive session.
The consent action providing authorization to negotiate the GMP and the bid approval for Berlin High were recorded as approved; the meeting minutes show the items will be brought back for review at a subsequent meeting for transparency as the GMP process continues.
