Policy committee recommends edits to student device rules; board approves first reading of extracurricular eligibility policy

At the May 20 RSU 67 board meeting, the district’s policy committee reported a review of student device and internet-use rules and recommended several housekeeping updates, and the board approved the first reading of policy JJ (extracurricular activities eligibility).
The committee recommended rescinding JNBD-R because it duplicates the main JNBD policy and contains an outdated reference to MSAD 67, and suggested changing the term “learner” to “student” across the documents to align with other district forms. The committee also reviewed related materials: the annual acknowledgement form (JNBD-E), search and questioning procedures (JIH, JIH-R) and the student search checklist (JIH-E), and noted they were following MSMA guidelines.
On extracurricular eligibility, Superintendent Rockwell said the district already has a policy that governs homeschooling participation (IHBJ/GA) and that adding additional language to JJ would be redundant. The board accepted the policy committee recommendation and approved the first reading of policy JJ.
The committee also flagged recent legislative changes affecting the homeless-student act and noted development of a new policy code on dangerous-behavior intervention (suggested code JLI) for future board consideration. Committee members said they will continue to refine the acknowledgement form (JNBD-E) and return with updates.
The first reading of policy JJ passed without recorded opposition. The board discussed moving further policy approvals to a different process at an upcoming meeting; the public comment period on May 20 had no speakers.
