City staff warns Goodland water use remains high despite recent rains; groundwater district review ongoing

City staff provided a water-conservation update, reporting that winter daily water use averages about 300,000 gallons but the city was seeing more than 1,000,000 gallons per day during recent weeks and anticipates peak summer days exceeding 2,000,000 gallons. Staff said recent rain events were not "drought-busting" and that customer behavior (automatic sprinklers, irrigation systems) keeps usage high even after storms.
Staff also noted the groundwater management district recently held a public hearing on the Lima formation and is accepting comments through June 10–11; any new rules from the district could allow additional regulation of municipal customers as well as agricultural producers and could ask municipalities to reduce usage by a percentage.
Commissioners encouraged continued resident conservation and discussed outreach ideas — including a proposed social-media campaign and a community-garden volunteer offering to help produce a water-conservation video.
Staff said parks' irrigation had been shut off for two weeks and that the city would continue to monitor usage and could bring formal drought measures forward if conditions warrant.
