Goodland awards chip rock haul contract to Frontier A at $10/ton

The Goodland City Commission approved awarding the chip-and-seal rock haul contract to Frontier A after the city received two bids. Kent, the city’s director of streets, told commissioners the low bidder, Frontier A, offered $10 per ton while the competing bid from Lance Hierig was $12 per ton. The city expects to purchase about 850 tons and haul rock from Syracuse.
Kent outlined the streets planned for chip-and-seal this season — including 16th Street in the industrial park, the east entrance off Highway 27, sections of East Center/Armory and stretches of Sherman and 11th Street — and said the work fits within the existing chip-seal budget line of roughly $190,000, after accounting for higher hauling and oil costs.
Commissioners questioned how this year’s tonnage compares to prior years; Kent said the city used about 900 tons last year and is planning about 850 tons this year. He also noted increases in hauling and fog-oil costs but said the budget has a reserve to cover modest overruns.
A motion to award the hauling contract to Frontier A was made and seconded; a roll call vote approved the award.
Kent recommended the award to Frontier A to secure the lower hauling price and keep chip-seal work on schedule.
