Millburn — Committee members and staff discussed several pedestrian-safety and downtown traffic measures on June 2, including a trial change to reverse-angle parking, removal of two existing crosswalks, and plans for a larger traffic study once a nearby development is operational.
The administrator described a change to reverse-angle parking between Lacawana and Holmes that began as a trial and asked residents for feedback while staff monitors operations. "That trial period will be again for several weeks," the administrator said, noting the town will evaluate parking counts and user experience.
Town staff and members said two crosswalks between Wyoming and Essex will be removed after expert review concluded their removal will increase pedestrian safety. Committee members and staff told the public a comprehensive townwide traffic study will be undertaken after the NES building comes online so that the study uses updated traffic patterns.
Police enforcement also factored into the discussion: Millburn police conducted a detail at the Whittingham/Millburn Avenue crosswalk and stopped 14 drivers during the enforcement action, which officials cited as an indication that the temporary bumpout and enforcement have improved safety.
Next steps: staff will monitor the parking pilot, collect public feedback, and schedule the broader traffic study once the major downtown development is complete.
