Planning intern demonstrates new Story Map of San Clemente historic properties

The Planning Commission on Wednesday heard a presentation from planning intern Alex Hong on a new ArcGIS Story Map that compiles San Clemente's historic-preservation inventory into a single, interactive resource.
"I set out to compile basically all the historically significant properties into an interactive and user-friendly map," Alex Hong said, explaining the tool lists more than 27 highlighted properties in the interface and links to the California DPR (Department of Parks and Recreation) survey for full records. Hong said the underlying dataset pulls from city GIS resources and photo and description permissions provided by the San Clemente Historical Society.
Commissioners and staff asked about operational details: whether the Story Map will be pinned to the city website (staff said it is planned to appear under the planning division's historic tab); where photos came from (the Historical Society provided current and historic images); and whether designation tiers (landmark status) are included — Hong said designation metadata were not fully available in the dataset searched but could be added in later iterations.
Commissioners characterized the tool as useful for economic-development and tourism purposes and recommended follow-up tasks to add designation levels and architect/builder information where available. The presentation concluded with commissioners congratulating the intern on completing the project as part of a university internship tied to UCI's advanced field study program.
What happens next: staff indicated the Story Map will be posted under the planning division's historic tab and that future interns or staff may add more designation metadata and additional historic photographs.
