Tumwater proclaims June Pride Month and marks the America 250 anniversary

Mayor Leetta Dolhoff opened the meeting with two special proclamations. Councilmember Megan Sullivan read a proclamation declaring June 2026 LGBTQIA2S+ Community Pride Month for the City of Tumwater; Sarah Ellison of the city’s equity commission accepted the proclamation and urged continued local support given a wave of state and national legislation affecting LGBTQ people.
“Seeing the rainbow flag flying at city hall means so much,” Sarah Ellison said, calling local visibility a vital message to youth and neighbors that they are “seen, valued, and safe” in Tumwater. New resident Amy Canava said she was grateful to have moved to a city that publicly recognizes and affirms its LGBTQ community.
Councilmember Eileen Sworth then read a proclamation recognizing the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and announcing the city’s America 250 events and partnerships. Guests from local chapters of the Daughters and Sons of the American Revolution and other historic‑preservation groups offered brief remarks and joined the council for a photo. The proclamations include an invitation to community celebrations such as the Tumwater family festival, Independence Day parade and historic events at the Schmidt House.
The council placed both proclamations on the public record during the June 2 meeting. The equity commission and event organizers encouraged residents to attend Tumwater Pride on June 20 at the ASH Cultural Community Center.
