Residents criticize demolition process as Taylorville council approves four tear-downs

Taylorville residents raised concerns about transparency and cost responsibility as the city council voted to demolish four derelict structures.

On the motion approved by the council, members authorized demolition at 1133 East Elm Street, 902 East Thompson Street, 809 East Lewis Street and 625 Cheney Street. The motion to table the demolitions failed 4–3, and the subsequent approval vote was 4–3.

During the public-comment period multiple residents criticized the process and asked for more clarity on who pays the costs for demolition and related expenses such as dumpsters. One commenter said the council’s handling of prior demolitions showed inconsistent accountability and asked for a better system to identify which properties should be removed and how costs will be recovered.

Council members acknowledged the existing ordinance process but did not provide a new timetable for follow-up. An alderman suggested that property owners should be held responsible and that the city must follow its ordinance enforcement procedures; another member said the board would need to return with more detailed recommendations rather than rehashing earlier discussion.

The demolition approvals will proceed, and the city clerk and code-enforcement staff were directed to confirm affidavit and consent forms from property owners when possible and to document cost assignments. Council members did not announce any immediate changes to the demolition policy; residents pressed for a clearer, published procedure in future meetings.
