Foxborough wins $500,000 Complete Streets grant; fire department awarded federal grants including SAFER funds to add firefighters

Town staff told the Select Board on Oct. 7 that Foxborough received several grants to support transportation and public safety projects.
Officials announced the town was awarded the maximum available Complete Streets grant — $500,000 — to fund improvements at the South/Green/Cedar Street intersection, with design work underway and construction expected in the spring. "We received the maximum award under the Complete Streets program of $500,000 to provide improvements to the South Street, Green Street, Cedar Street intersection," a town official said at the meeting.
The town also received a FY24 Assistance to Firefighters Grant award of $76,181.81 to purchase a vehicle exhaust removal system for the fire department. In addition, staff reported the town learned it was awarded a SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) grant in round two that would fund hiring five firefighters (the amount was discussed by staff during the meeting). Town officials said they will bring a plan to the board at a future meeting outlining the staffing and the post‑grant funding considerations.
Board members asked how the SAFER award tied to the submitted proposal and whether the grant amount corresponded to funding five positions; staff said the grant was tied to the department’s proposal and generally accounts for salaries and benefits. Town staff emphasized they will present a hiring and post‑grant sustainability plan for board review before final steps are taken.
