Council approves resolution to apply for FEMA BRIC grant to retrofit water tank for seismic resilience

The Puyallup City Council approved a resolution designating an agent and authorizing staff to apply for a FEMA BRIC grant to seismically retrofit an elevated water tank on 39th Street.
City Engineer Hans Hunger explained the city already has a FEMA grant for one tank and now needs to retrofit the adjacent second tank to prevent one tank from tipping into the other during a major earthquake. "We applied to FEMA's resilience program and they encouraged a full application for about $4.5 million to retrofit the second tank," Hunger said.
Council approved the resolution by voice vote, authorizing the city to proceed with the BRIC application and to identify and name an applicable agent to manage the grant application and subsequent administration if awarded.
