Woolwich committee hears updates on roads, emergency services and recreation plans

Township Administrator Jim Watson and department heads briefed the Woolwich Township Committee on ongoing projects and operational reports at the June 17 meeting.

Watson provided an overview of active projects and Mayor Matthias expanded on work planned for Garwin Road. Township Engineer Samantha Boonstra outlined what could be done if additional grant money becomes available to support Garwin Road work. The meeting also recorded a municipal crosswalk washout; Mayor Matthias said Public Works initially filled sinking bricks with sand and Committeeman Frederick asked Public Works to repatch the sinkhole.

Public-safety reports included a May report read by Woolwich Fire Company Chief David Valichka, who raised concerns about response times for Inspira medics at a local location. Swedesboro Fire Bureau’s report was submitted in writing. Police Chief Morgan thanked the Committee for its recent hires; the Committee had no questions on the police monthly report.

Other details noted in reports and liaison updates: the tax collector reported $9,504,131.19 remitted for May; Committeewoman Minhas said Secretary Shannon Kilpatrick will enroll to become the township’s Certified Recycling Coordinator and provided pickup counts (44 extra cardboard, 142 metal and 256 bulk collections); Committeeman Frederick mentioned a mural special project and proposed a pickleball tournament scheduled for Aug. 17–19; Committeeman McGovern reminded residents about movie night on June 28.

The Committee approved minutes (May 20 regular and executive, June 3 regular) and approved bills and purchase orders; the meeting adjourned at 7:34 p.m.
