Building officials report progress on bracing and demolition at Trinity Church and nearby structures, joint scene exam expected late June

The building representative reported bracing on the 778 south façade and a dumpster on site while contractors perform partial demolition of an attached rear structure; the official said they had not been able to reach one property owner to confirm progress. “You have probably noticed the bracing that has gone up on 778,” the building representative said, describing the contractor’s engineering report and the slow manual demolition method being used at Trinity.
Public-works and code staff confirmed they received calls about downed electrical wiring; crews had barricaded the area and were coordinating with the contractor and Duke Energy to restore safe power access. A city staff member said two homeowners on the alley were displaced and that Duke Energy plans to replace three poles as part of restoring service.
Staff also reported the city has issued a 30-day notice for a joint scene examination of the alley where a secondary collapse occurred; the joint scene exam is expected in the last week of June, after which staff and the contractor plan to clear remaining debris including a damaged golf cart structure.
The board emphasized safety and reopening Broadway as soon as practicable. Staff said the immediate priority is safety and assessing damage to public property before restoring at least the northbound lane of Broadway. No new formal order or permit action was taken by the board at this meeting; staff will continue to coordinate contractor activity, utility access, and the joint scene exam.
