The Lowell City Council voted to approve requested street and parking closures for the River Trail Triathlon, scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026. The event will include kayaking on the Flat River, cycling and running on city streets.
Staff described the requested closures: Main Street from Riverwalk Plaza to Riverside (parking lane closure and bridge area), Hunt Street eastbound from North Hudson to Riverside, and Riverside Drive northbound lane closures; the police department will place no‑parking signs after midnight on June 19, mark routes with cones and tape, and use a police vehicle to close lanes during the race. Staff noted that the city still must secure an MDOT permit for Main Street closures.
Grant, representing the event, said this is the fourth year of the triathlon, that the route is unchanged from last year, and that the event has raised more than $10,000 for local community causes across prior years and about $5,000 last year for local school mental‑health initiatives. He asked council to approve the closures and offered to coordinate meetings with fire, police and public works to finalize logistics.
Council discussed the interaction of the race route with concurrent construction on Riverside and agreed staff and police would review and approve any necessary reroutes; the council approved the closures by motion and roll call. Staff will publish road‑closure notices on the city website and Facebook page and work with the organizer on volunteer and safety coordination.
