BRADENTON — Commissioners responded to public outcry and a large Memorial Day volunteer cleanup at Old Memphis Cemetery after reported damage and neglect to gravesites.
Commissioner Ballard summarized the cleanup and asked staff to take four steps: verify whether county ground-penetrating-radar equipment is sensitive enough for burial-site mapping; pursue state and private grant opportunities (including contacts offered by State Rep. Fentrice Driskell and a reparations-focused fund); assess eligibility for National Register designation; and coordinate with the local American Legion post on a respectful veterans memorial that avoids disturbing graves.
Volunteers and relatives who spoke at the meeting thanked the cleanup crews and urged permanent protections. The board approved the motions and directed staff to report back with technical findings and potential funding sources.
What the board asked staff to do: test GPR equipment and report whether county resources suffice; engage state and nonprofit grant partners; prepare steps toward historical designation where appropriate; and advise on any actions that would disturb burial sites before memorial placement.
