Board to seek $65,000 CTE expansion grant and consider scaling trade programs

"The grant provides $65,000 in funding and our school system would be responsible for anything over that to hire this employee," Mr. Atkins said, and added that the grant funding can only be used to hire an employee.
Atkins reviewed enrollment data by pathway and school to demonstrate demand: North Stokes reported 28 course enrollments in animal science representing 24 unique students; technology/engineering classes at North Stokes showed about 68 enrollments and 62 unique students. Staff said trade pathways at West Stokes showed particularly strong multi‑course participation (examples: carpentry and electrical enrollments with 10–17 students taking multiple sections).
Based on a student survey after a recent retirement, North Stokes students favored adding trade offerings (construction, masonry, electrical) by roughly a 2–to‑3 margin. Staff proposed recruiting a carpentry instructor and reviving carpentry at North Stokes; administrators said if an instructor is hired they will advertise to students over the summer to allow schedule adjustments before the fall.
Board members supported moving the grant to the consent agenda at the next meeting and emphasized that hiring qualified instructors remains a key hurdle for CTE expansion.
Next steps: place the CTE expansion grant application on the consent agenda for the next board meeting; if funded, advertise openings and coordinate schedule changes with school counselors and Mr. Vernon.
