Elco trustees honor students, athletes and STEM teachers at regular meeting

The board recognized students for Great American/Great Nevada projects, multiple spring sports state champions, and named STEM Teachers of the Year including Ernie Mendes and Ryan Carpenter; sponsors for the teacher awards were also acknowledged.
At the start of the meeting the Elco County School District board paused for multiple recognitions. Teachers described the Great American and Great Nevada programs for fourth and fifth graders, which include memorization and civic assignments. The board read dozens of student names and handed out certificates and flags.
Trustees also recognized multiple teams and individuals for state athletic accomplishments in track, baseball, softball and golf from Wells High School, Spring Creek High School and Elco High School. Coaches and support staff were publicly acknowledged.
In a separate item, the board presented the 2026 ECSD STEM Teacher of the Year awards. Ernie Mendes of Spring Creek Middle School accepted onstage and thanked the district for 30 years of service; Ryan Carpenter (Aahi/Wahhee combined school) was recognized in absentia and the district read his nomination into the record. District staff also thanked sponsors that supported the award program.
The recognitions were approved as part of the meeting agenda and were followed by the business items later in the evening.
